Flooring Tiles Calculator โ Avoid Over or Under-Ordering
Calculating the right number of tiles before purchase saves money on over-ordering and prevents project delays from running short mid-installation. This calculator includes a standard wastage buffer for realistic, practical estimates.
Why the 10% Wastage Buffer?
Tile installation always involves cutting pieces to fit room edges, around fixtures, and at corners โ this generates waste even with skilled installation. A 10% buffer is the industry-standard allowance; complex room shapes or diagonal tile patterns may need 15%.
Beyond Tile Cost
Remember to budget separately for tile adhesive, grout, spacers, and labor charges โ typically tile installation labor costs โน15-40 per sq.ft depending on tile type and complexity, on top of the material cost shown here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy extra tiles beyond the 10% wastage already included? +
It's wise to purchase from the same production batch and keep a few extra tiles (beyond this estimate) for future repairs โ matching exact tile shade and pattern from a different batch years later is often impossible.
Does tile size affect wastage percentage? +
Larger tiles (2x2 ft or bigger) generally have lower percentage wastage in simple rectangular rooms but higher absolute cost per cut piece. Complex room layouts increase wastage regardless of tile size.
What about labor and installation costs? +
This calculator covers only material (tile) cost. Installation labor typically adds โน15-40 per sq.ft depending on your city, tile type, and pattern complexity (diagonal or herringbone patterns cost more than straight-lay).

Tiles Calculation Formula
Tiles needed = Area รท Tile Area ร (1 + Wastage %)
Standard wastage = 10% for straight laying, 15% for diagonal. Always add wastage for cuts and breakage.
Worked Example
Room = 15 ร 12 feet = 180 sq ft. Using 2ร2 ft tiles (4 sq ft each). Tiles needed = 180 รท 4 = 45 tiles. Add 10% wastage = 45 + 4.5 = 50 tiles (buy 50, have 5 spare). Cost at โน80/tile = โน4,000.
Tips
- Always buy 10โ15% extra โ tile batches differ slightly in shade
- 2ร2 ft tiles are standard for most rooms; 4ร2 ft makes small rooms look bigger
- Anti-skid tiles are mandatory for bathrooms and kitchen floors
